 When brake breaks

Over years of repairing servo motors, we have developed a deep understanding of motor functions and how they integrate into machines, allowing us to deliver repairs that last.

In this repair, we found the brake to be faulty due to its’ torque being low, preventing it from performing its job effectively.

Why are brakes are used in servo motors?

  • Maintain position in vertical or load-bearing applications (e.g. robot arms)

  • Prevent drift or drop when the motor is de-energized

  • Enhance safety during power loss or emergency stop

It’s worth highlighting that the brake is not used to stop the motor during normal operation — that function is handled by the drive. The brake only activates when the motor is powered off to hold position.

Low brake torque can prevent effective operation, causing the motor to slip when it should remain stationary.

To return this brake to working condition we had the brake pad re-lined, skimmed to the correct thickness, then re-lapped until correct torque was achieved.

If you're looking for a repair partner you can rely on, we’re here to help.
