Meet our Team
Technical Services Director
Adam Daffern, B.Eng
Thoughts of a career in engineering surfaced when Adam was studying for A-levels. An interest in IT proved the spur and he joined our team with a BTEC and two years' experience in Halifax as a maintenance engineer. Since then he has completed an HNC in electric and electronic engineering, and graduated with a first-class degree in engineering management, supported by the company. Adam is responsible for running our on and-off site technical services for industrial machinery. These range from servo motor repairs to contracting, drives and controls and condition monitoring. Outside work, he enjoys playing football and tennis

John Matthews, B,Eng
UK-born John was educated to college level in Zimbabwe and began his career in the electronics department of a textile firm where his job included making PCBs. After three years he went to Blackburn College, gaining an OND in electrical engineering. Rising up the education ladder, he graduated from Stafford University with a B.Eng. For 18 years he worked in the service department of manufacturer Brother UK. A subsequent spell as a traffic warden was ended by a call to work for QSRL where his main responsibility is mechanical rebuilds. Outside work, his main interest are guitars and motor
cycles, but not always at the same time.

Paul Plowman
Paul was raised in the Yorkshire Dales where he showed an early interest in soldering. Before long, his practical creativity won him the title of Young Regional Inventor of the Year. A spell studying engineering at university was followed by jobs in IT support and at an electronics firm. In between, he continued to make electronic items ranging from a clock that featured on TV's QI and tray of water that made bells tinkle. This combination of talents led to a position at QSRL. His interests include juggling, 3D photography and drumming. He also had time to help found Hackspace Manchester, a community run workshop and studio.

Tom Weaver, BA
A proud son of Manchester and a ManU fan, Tom showed an aptitude for practical subjects at school. But a strong interest in music led him to Salford University and a degree in audio and visual science. By night, this involved much singing and guitar-playing in bands and DJ-ing at events. After graduating, he worked in hospitality, as a chef and front of house, but the Covid lockdown set him on a fresh path. Although his interest in engineering had been more practical than academic and involved making things, he applied for a job at QSRL where first-class training led him to his present post. Music – playing, writing songs and composing – remains an important pastime.

Seth Sykes
Seth first entertained ideas of becoming an engineer while at King James's School, Almondbury, where good GCSE results included the equivalent of an A grade in maths. He took his first job at 16 at an engineering firm in Ossett but left to enrol on a mechatronics maintenance course at Kirklees Engineering College. While there he learned of a job vacancy at Quality Servo Motor Repairs. An interview and work trial was followed by the offer of a job. Seth is benefitting from the excellent training we provide and is already stripping motors under supervision. Outside work, he follows Huddersfield Town and enjoys a wide range of music.

Jacky Leung, B.Eng, M.Sc
Jacky' early interest in electronics crystallised into academic success when he went to Australia to study for a B.Eng degree. That was followed by Master's in his home country of Hong Kong, where he went on to work as a project engineer for the area's biggest manufacturer. Further experience came as a marketing engineer at Schneider Electric. He left the former colony for the UK in 2021, arriving with a suitcase and a guitar. He took a job at Starbuck's until learning of a job vacancy at QSRL. He was taken on as a trainee and now works on the feedback side. His interests include DIY, furniture making and running. Three marathons have been completed and two are to come.
How it all began through one man's vision and expertise
Our founder, the late Ralph Southworth, began the company after a career that encompassed electronic engineering and design, computer programming, software and construction.
This combination of wide training, varied skills and experience led to the creation in 2011 of Quality Servo Motor Repairs, with its roots in solid engineering practice and diagnostic innovation. It was these qualities, and the careful recruitment of staff, that rapidly took it to the forefront of the industry.
